ATO to shop tax deadbeats to credit rating agencies

The Australian Tax Office has devised an ingenious new way to make deadbeat companies pay their way: Dob them in to the credit rating agencies.

In what appears to be an exception to the right of privacy that usually covers taxpayers' affairs, the Federal government announced in Monday's mid-year economic and fiscal outlook that from 1 July 2017 it will allow the ATO to tell Credit Rating Bureaus about businesses that have not "effectively engaged" with it about their tax debts.
