The federal government must consider raising the GST from 10 to 15 per cent, some of Australia's top economists have warned, urging them to package a hike in the goods and services tax with an income tax cut that would alleviate pressure on the lowest income households.
The call, which was encouraged by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg three years ago, has been re-energised amid a new battle between the states and Canberra over the GST carve-up, as Victoria and NSW kick off a campaign for a guarantee that "no state will be worse off" to be enshrined in legislation.
