
Tax debate delivers leadership, maturity
Australia has been debating the pros and cons of a consumption — or goods and services — tax seriously for 30 years, ever since then-treasurer Paul Keating wheeled out his tax cart and challenged everyone to get in or be left behind.
Unfortunately for Mr Keating, his colleague and prime minister Bob Hawke listened to the trade union movement, which said their members couldn’t accept a shift in tax from income to indirect sources and the cart was pushed off the road.
