The Tax Practitioners Board has taken temporary measures in revising some of its policies and is providing additional support around registration renewals to tax agents, especially those based in Victoria.

"We understand you have a lot of competing priorities and are especially aware of the impacts on Victorians as they grapple with the new restrictions that have been implemented," the TPB said.

"Your health and safety and that of your family is of the utmost importance, and this may lead to you having difficulty in meeting some of your obligations with us. With that in mind, we are being more flexible in how we support you."

The TPB has to date implemented several support measures, including annual declaration and renewal concessions; relaxed CPE activities; assistance gaining relevant experience for renewal; expanded BAS services; and board approved course requirements concession.

"We encourage you to contact us if your ability to meet your obligations is affected," the TPB said.

It also urged practitioners to seek mental health support when they need it.

"We know many people are feeling anxious, stressed and scared and that there has been an increased demand on mental health services, particularly in Victoria.

"The loss of freedom, the challenges of isolation, fear for loved ones, and concerns about employment can all have a considerable impact on your health and wellbeing. We strongly encourage anyone experiencing issues with their mental health to seek assistance. Victorians can access 24/7 mental health support through government-funded digital and telephone counselling services," the TPB reminded.

As of last week, accountants based in metropolitan Melbourne have closed their practices for a period of six weeks, as Victoria entered stage four restrictions.

"These are heartbreaking decisions but is simply no choice. The advice from a medical expert is that this is the only way to get these numbers under control, to drive them down low enough so that we can open up again,” the Victorian Premier said at the time.
