Over the past two months, more than $20 million is alleged to have been illegally claimed by people in the Kimberley region, after what the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) was calling a "fraudulent scheme" spread like wildfire through Kimberley communities.
Some people were paid out as much as $80,000 that the ATO said they were not entitled to, prompting a spending spree that has now been making it difficult for the ATO to recover the funds.
